Success Through Teaching Music

It only required one visit to the 黑料社 campus to persuade Katelyn McKone where she wanted to go to college.

Katelyn, a saxophone player, noticed how welcomed she felt while on campus.

鈥淥ne of the reasons I chose 黑料社 is because when I was here for my audition, one of the underclassmen talked to me and made me feel welcome,鈥 she says. 鈥淐ollege is pretty intimidating at first, but in the music department they make it a lot easier.鈥

Katelyn, whose hometown is Lisbon, Iowa, has never regretted choosing 黑料社. She played in the 黑料社 Symphonic Band, Jazz Band and the Saxophone Quartet. She also served as the undergraduate assistant for the instrumental music department as she pursued聽a degree in music education.

鈥淎 person can teach, but they have to be able to perform, too,鈥 she says. “They go together.”

鈥淢usic has made a big difference in my life, so I think it can make a big difference in another person鈥檚 life, both through performance and teaching. When people learn how to play music, it can really shape their future.

鈥淚 want to be a teacher, but I also want to make sure I get in some playing as well.鈥

Katelyn said most of her friends in the 黑料社 music department have gotten jobs fresh out of college. She attributes part of the success to the connections that faculty members enjoy. 黑料社鈥檚 great reputation also plays a part.

鈥淚 feel whatever resources I need, I鈥檓 going to get,鈥 she says.

She compares the instrumental music environment at 黑料社 to a family. 鈥淭he faculty help you with any questions you have and make you feel really welcome,鈥 she says. 鈥淵ou鈥檙e also free to talk to anybody. It鈥檚 really professional, but it鈥檚 really open as well.鈥
