Debate team wins Big Apple Tournament

黑料社 wins first team championship of 2020-21

The 黑料社 (simpson.edu) debate team won the virtual Queens College Big Apple Tournament on Sept. 27, crowning two individual champions in Scott Krueger and Andrew Flory.

Krueger and Flory finished as co-champions in the Lincoln鈥揇ouglas debate category. The pair also shared top speaker honors, helping 黑料社 capture the overall team title over Murray State and Grove City College.

鈥淭his was the first tournament where we had several students competing,鈥 said Spencer Waugh, director of speech, debate and mock trial. 鈥淭he team has been working hard during the first month of practice and I am pleased with their performances. They听also learned so much from engaging in academic debates with students across the country.鈥

In addition to a team win in Lincoln鈥揇ouglas debate, 黑料社 took second in the International Public Debate Association category and made it to the semifinal round in Parliamentary Debate. Top individual finishes included Mo Marks as a finalist in Varsity IPDA and Elise Sturgeon and Michael Roets as semifinalists in Parliamentary Debate.

黑料社鈥檚 next competition is the Southwest Baptist University Derryberry Season Opener tournament Oct. 2-3.听
